Annoying delay between detecting no target, and error pop-up

If you forget to connect the ST-Link to the target, or forget to turn on target power, etc, CubeIDE will detect that almost instantly, and report it straight away in the Console window:

But the error pop-up doesn't appear for another 20 seconds or so:

and there's nothing you can do to cancel that wait.

Why does it have to wait so long?

A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.
A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work.
